Over the past few years there have been many books written on how to teach, train and organize youth and adult treble-voiced choirs. Despite this superb and growing body of information, I have yet to see a book that addresses the core goal of the Choral Excellence for Treble Voices project: explaining in detail how fine choral literature can serve as a tool for musical education. The selection of choral literature that addresses specific choral techniques is at the heart of the growth and artistic development of singers of all ages, and the end result is a score-driven, rather than a conductor-driven rehearsal. These rehearsals use fine choral literature as the primary tool in the instruction of singers.
Selecting music for literary and musical value will always be paramount, but selecting a score for its ability to train technically is at the heart of the growth and artistic development of every singer. Conductors must not take the pedagogical benefits of the score for granted! They must ask "What role can this score play in the training of my choir?" thereby selecting scores that train the singers to understand specific choral or singing techniques.
