THE AMERICAN SPIRITUAL: AN HISTORIC PERSPECTIVE

Conductors have been composing, singing and programming spirituals since the 1700's, long after the first African American arrived on our shores in 1619. In the twentieth century they have been popular with audiences and congregations all over the world. This is due in part to their first introduction to large white audiences in America and Europe in 1871. The Fisk University Jubilee Singers from Nashville, Tennessee began singing a wide variety of these inspiring songs on tour to raise money for their all-Black university.
